Connecting with the Right Support Services

With or without the NDIS, it’s time to explore what supports might help your child thrive. These supports may come through the NDIS if you’re eligible, public services, or community programs.

Every child is different and there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to supports. The key is finding the right mix of services based on your child’s needs, strengths, and goals.

Types of services

Some of the support services you could access include:

These support services may be funded through the NDIS, publicly available through community health centres, or accessed through out-of-pocket costs or Medicare plans.

Other supports are school based, like student support staff.

You may also find informal supports, including peer groups, support workers, or inclusive sports and arts programs in your local area.

Read more about Living in community on page 14 of our Parent Booklet.

Choosing a service or provider

When choosing a service or provider, it’s important to think about what would work best for your child and family.

Ask yourself: what does my child enjoy or respond to well? What are our goals? Does the provider understand disability, and your child’s specific needs? Are they flexible, inclusive, and respectful?

What questions should you ask providers? Find out on [page number] of our Parent Handbook [LINK]

Not all services are the same, so it can help to hear from other people to inform your decision. You may want to speak with other parents or caregivers in online forums or local support groups, ask professionals like a trusted GP for a recommendation, or consult professional directories online.
