National Youth Disability Summit – What young people with disability said – Employment Position Paper

Text: What young people said.

“I got really frustrated and thought something was wrong with me. I was like, ‘Do I just have a really bad work ethic? Why am I so tired compared to all of my colleagues?’. That was around the same time I was reckoning that I actually am disabled, that I actually do have conditions that limit the way that I work and how long I can work for. So that was something that was quite hard to deal with but has been something that I’ve accepted and learned to work with over the last few years.”

Young people with disability are more than twice as likely to be unemployed than older adults with disability (25 per cent compared to 8 per cent).

Young people with disability are also more than twice as likely to be underemployed. This means they can and want to work more hours than they do. In this paper, young people with disability talk about ways to make employment more accessible.
