Children and Young People with Disability Australia (CYDA) congratulates the Albanese Government on its recent re-election.

The historic result comes at a critical moment for children and young people with disability, and their families and caregivers.

Many in our community continue to be disproportionately impacted by the cost-of-living crisis, locked out of education and employment opportunities, and left uncertain about the future of vital disability supports like the NDIS.

At the same time, this election marks a step in the right direction for disability representation, with candidates like para-athlete and disability advocate Ali France winning seats in Parliament for the first time.

CYDA stands ready to work with the Government and all members of the new Parliament to:

  • Deliver inclusive education for all, so every student with disability has access to quality inclusive learning
  • Strengthen the disability support ecosystem, including the NDIS and foundational supports, so children and young people receive the services they need
  • Address the cost-of-living crisis, including with targeted employment and income support reform
  • Expand individual advocacy services to empower children and young people with disability to have their voices heard and rights upheld

With its renewed mandate, the Government has a clear opportunity to come to the table, listen to disabled voices, and deliver a more inclusive Australia for everyone.

Now is the time to turn widely supported reforms, including for a National Roadmap for Inclusive Education, into reality.

We look forward to collaborating closely to make sure every child and young person with disability is supported to thrive in Australian schools, workplaces, and the wider community.
