Australia’s national representative body for children and young people with disability (CYDA) welcomes the NDIS Minister’s commitment to break the bottleneck for children to get their NDIS support.
Speaking on the ABC today, Minister Stuart Robert said he would ensure families who have their children accepted into the NDIS would get a support plan, so the money can flow to get services, within 50 days. If not the NDIS will pay $10,000 immediately. He said the average waiting time for families of children with disability to get a plan is currently 127 days.
CYDA Chief Executive Officer, Mary Sayers says “the NDIS has been a bureaucratic nightmare for families of children with disability. Families tell us they have to wait months and months to get services for their children”.
“It is great the NDIS Minister has made this commitment, and this is just one of the many problems that need to be fixed to ensure children and young people with disability can get the support they need from the NDIS.”
“The importance of early intervention for children with disability is crucial. Forcing parents to make multiple calls and appointments to have their plans sorted is just ridiculous. The NDIS is meant to ensure that children with disability who are eligible don’t have to wait,” says Mary Sayers.
“We are heartened that the Minister is responding to NDIS concerns, and look forward to ensuring this bureaucratic mess stops so families can get their children into support services faster.”
