Young people with disability must have the same rights and opportunities as their non-disabled peers to access meaningful, inclusive, and sustainable employment.
In our submission to the Department of Social Services’ consultation paper Next Steps in Supported Employment, we back recommendations by the Disability Royal Commission to gradually phase out segregated employment and support young jobseekers with disability.
We recommend supporting rights-based employment by implementing:
- A co-designed Youth Disability Inclusive Employment Strategy
- A Wage Equity Plan
- Tailored early supports into employment pathways
This is needed for Australia to meet its obligations under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and the Australian Disability Strategy 2021-2031.
