The use of artificial intelligence (AI) and automation in the delivery of government services must be guided by strong and practical safeguards.
In its feedback to Services Australia’s draft policy on automation and AI ethics, CYDA called on the agency to:
- Clearly include human rights obligations relevant to social security, non-discrimination, and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disability (CRPD)
- Acknowledge past harms, like the damage caused by the Robodebt scheme, and provide meaningful safeguards
- Improve protections for marginalised and priority groups
- Offer simple, free, and accessible pathways for individuals to challenge any significant decision about entitlements, compliance, or debt
These changes are necessary to make sure automation and AI are used safely, responsibly, and ethically.
