CYDA’s submission on the Online Safety Amendment (Social Media Minimum Age) Bill 2024

The proposed blanket ban on social media access for people under 16 risks disproportionately harming disabled young people.

In its November 2024 submission to the Senate Environment and Communications Legislation Committee, CYDA raises concerns about increased social isolation, accessibility barriers in proof-of-age requirements, and human rights infringements.

It calls for a nuanced approach that prioritises safer platforms, digital literacy education, and accessibility-focused reforms instead of restrictive measures.
