Children and young people with disability experience high rates of suspension, exclusion, and gate-keeping in our schooling system.
That is why CYDA supports proposed legislative changes to improve data collection and make reporting on how often this happens clearer and more transparent.
In our recent submission to the South Australian Department for Education’s consultation, we make the following recommendations:
- Make sure schools are held accountable for reporting, loopholes are closed, and informal exclusions can be reported
- Strengthen amendments so exclusion is only ever used as a last resort
- Use policy to make behaviour expectations more consistent and reduce exclusion across the state
These changes will support schools to be more transparent and provide stronger data on what is really happening.
This will lead to a better understanding of the experiences of children and young people with disability in South Australia.
