Australia should strive for international best practice by committing to a rights-based approach to children and young people with disability, and instating a national Human Rights Act.
The Universal Periodic Review is conducted every 4.5 years by the United Nations Human Rights Council, and involves the 193 UN Member States who review each other’s human rights records and make recommendations.
In CYDA’s submission, we looked at the 344 recommendations the Australian Government received at the last UPR in 2021 and identified 50 recommendations related to children, young people, and people with disability. Of these, fewer than half have been accepted.
CYDA calls for Australia to:
- Accept the 27 recommendations relating to youth and disability not yet accepted
- Make a voluntary commitment to a national Human Rights Act
