CYDA regularly hears that navigating NDIS access and eligibility processes is confusing, cumbersome, and inconsistent for children, young people with disability and families.
With 52 per cent of NDIS participants aged 18 and under, and eligibility rates highest for young applicants, it’s vitally important that any access changes for children and young people are evidence-based, consistent, fair, and transparent.
In CYDA’s submission, we call for:
- NDIS access processes that safeguard human rights and comply with Australia’s international human rights obligations, including a commitment to transparency about the use of AI in assessments, and guarantees of support while decisions are made
- Evidence-based co-design principles and lived experience to underpin an access decision-making process that is person-centred, fair, consistent, transparent, tailored, and culturally responsive
- A clear approach to assessing evidence, including recognising lived experience, ensuring that “appropriate treatment” is clearly defined and operationalised, and transparent standards for staff to act on evidence in a timely manner.
