Current ABS data collection is inconsistent and inaccessible, making it difficult to gain an accurate snapshot of children and young people with disability today.
In its November 2024 submission to the ABS Consultation on collecting data about disability, CYDA calls for improving nationally consistent data collection about disability in Australia.
It recommends this data collection be:
- Strengths-based: enabling people with disability to define their own identity and share their lived experience.
- Intersectional: linking datasets to capture diversity within disability.
- Accessible: ensuring children and young people can partipate directly.
CYDA also points to the need for new datasets in the area of education, as there is a gap in our understanding of the experiences of students with disability.
