CYDA consistently hears that support coordination provides invaluable support to children, young people with disability and families, particularly those accessing the NDIS for the first time.
For it to be most effective, support coordination for children and young people must be funded to deliver quality and continuity of care, and be delivered by professionals with appropriate understanding of disability, inclusion best practice, and general childhood development.
In CYDA’s submission, we call for:
- Centring lived experience: Appointing lived experience positions on service commissioning panels, and a minimum quota of lived experience staff across providers
- Place-based supports: Providing participants with support to access local networks, informal supports, and community connections; coordinated service planning; and equity-weighted regional commissioning
- Building workforce capability: Training providers to support the unique needs of children and young people with disability, and aligning to the National Best Practice Framework for Early Childhood Intervention
- Quality and continuity through transitions: Supporting individualised, age-appropriate plans and continuity of care, especially during transition times.
