Children and young people with disability experience many structural barriers during high school and tertiary education.
In CYDA’s submission, we propose the Parliamentary Inquiry into the factors driving educational attainment expand its focus beyond a boy/girl binary.
It should examine how this intersects with other factors such as disability, gender diversity, cultural and linguistic diversity including First Nations communities, socio-economic status and location.
CYDA recommends the government:
- Invest in the learning and development of educators in Universal Design for Learning
- Support attendance for disabled students with a Multi-Tiered System of Support Model
- Strengthen data collection, reporting and linkages to learning, social, and wellbeing outcomes for students with disability
- Create a positive duty to refer disability discrimination and non-compliance with the Disablity Standards for Education
- Address increased barriers for disabled students with disablity loadings to school
