Assistance animals support children and young people with disability with communication, mobility, sensory regulation, and community participation.

In our response to the government’s consultation paper on the draft National Principles for the regulation of Assistance Animals, we call for stronger protections, clearer processes, and better support for children and young people with disability who use them.

We recommend the government:

Our submission includes practical ways the National Principles can be made to be stronger, clearer, and fairer. It explore how a national intitiative would make sure the principles are delivered across all states and territories.

For it to work, it should include streamlined access to assistance animals through simpler NDIS processes, a national education campaign, and clear definitions for what counts as an assistance animal.
